Your Shoes Matter ...

Sam Hohaia ( Craftsman/Shop Manager)

Sam has been involved in the family business from a very young age, along with his brothers and sisters. The shop was a place of big noisy machines and the smell of leather and glues. They would come after school to clean the shop, serve customers, help out the back with repairs, or just watch how things were done.

Sam has been working full time for over 7 yrs, and running the shop for the last 2 yrs. He has acquired the many skills of a quality craftsman. This, combined with his knowledge of shoe care, shoe construction and footwear materials Sam is able to advise customers with great assurance and confidence.

Terence Hohaia  (Marster Craftsman/Owner)

With 40 years experience as a cobbler, Terence is one of the best in the business. Starting an apprenticeship in the late 70's his work as a cobbler began at Rose and Bartlett's, a small shop on Custom Street, one of the original Shoe Repair businesses situated in Auckland Central.

In the early 80's Terence left for Sydney to work at one of Australia's oldest shoe repair establishments - Falkinghams, which still exists today. It was here that Terence mastered the true craft of a cobbler.

"Sydney was an exciting place in the 80's, and I was fortunate enough to work along side many cobblers from around the world, mainly the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Our customers were also very knowledgeable on how they wanted things done. So there was always something to learn. I made a decision early that I would one day own and run my own business". Terence.

Returning to New Zealand in 1990, Terence took over John Roberts Shoe Repairs in Milford, Auckland. It was already an established business owned by the cobbler John Roberts. Keeping the original name, Terence quickly built a strong customer base and a reputation for quality and excellence.

Investing in the best shoe repair machinery from Germany, the workshop is both modern, though still uses traditional tools and machinery. This, with a wealth of experience, Terence has developed strong methodologies and techniques that are unique to John Roberts Shoe Repairs.

With several awards as 'Best Shoe Repairer', both Nationally and in Australia, Terence, and now along with his son, Sam, continue to provide quality service and sound shoe care advice.

Outside of work Terence is a musician, loves fishing, surfing and of course dancing.
